INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities have often addressed the scam of people fraudulently representing themselves as law enforcement officers and making calls to residents that they're wanted.

But the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said one scam artist is trying to make his scheme sound more legit by identifying himself by the name of a real deputy.

Friday, the Sheriff's Office clarified that Sheriff's Lt. Dane Morris is not making calls to people about warrants for missed jury duty or demanding payments for not showing up to court.

Anyone who gets such a call should recognize it as a scam for multiple reasons.

"Law Enforcement will never call you requesting money," the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Friday.
